Blues.....Old and New

My brother Phil and a few friends watch blues and get drunk the odd time. You Tube is a great source for footage and music of some of the blues greats. I created a playlist of blues from Robert Johnson right up to Jack White in order to show the impact blues has had on modern music.

In the second video, Eddie "Son" House does a version of his Death Letter Blues where he tells the story of having to identify his Wife in the morgue. The rawness of this song is unbelievable and has been discussed by musicians as well as anthropology students for years. It shows the harshness of life for some of these fellas in the 30's and 40's in america. Slavery might well have been abolished but these guys still lived in the plantation and worked for white farmers. The video of Son house is from the 70's. Previous to this he had gone into retirement and had been living in a bedsit in New Jersey until Blind owl from Canned heat tracked him down. He was a mad man for the drink and an unbelievable player. One of the god fathers of blues.

Son house is on second on this list, there are 15 songs so just click the forward button to change them
