Blues.....Old and New
My brother Phil and a few friends watch blues and get drunk the odd time. You Tube is a great source for footage and music of some of the blues greats. I created a playlist of blues from Robert Johnson right up to Jack White in order to show the impact blues has had on modern music.
In the second video, Eddie "Son" House does a version of his Death Letter Blues where he tells the story of having to identify his Wife in the morgue. The rawness of this song is unbelievable and has been discussed by musicians as well as anthropology students for years. It shows the harshness of life for some of these fellas in the 30's and 40's in america. Slavery might well have been abolished but these guys still lived in the plantation and worked for white farmers. The video of Son house is from the 70's. Previous to this he had gone into retirement and had been living in a bedsit in New Jersey until Blind owl from Canned heat tracked him down. He was a mad man for the drink and an unbelievable player. One of the god fathers of blues.

Two for your headphones - WARNING! may or may not be enjoyed at a party as i have so cruelly found out :(
I saw Midlake on the BBC footage of Glasto last year and really enjoyed their performance. The harmonies and chord changes have seen them thrown into the unoriginally named "Neo-Progressive" genre. confusing enough anyway but all the same, you would have to be into 70's prog rock to like them. If you like Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull and also enjoy lyrics about the end of days and how terrible we treat our planet then these guys will be right up your street but by then you may no longer live on a street, you may live in a boat or some other seaworthy vessel and breathe through gills at the back of your ears. Their Album is called "The Courage of Others" and the opening track is called "Acts of Man".
Saunders got me into Younger Brother, not his Younger brother but the electronic duo formed in 2003 by Simon Posford (best known for his Hallucinogen and Shpongle projects) and Benji Vaughan (Prometheus). Their brand of [lifted this from another review] twisted electronica is hard to pin down as it hints at many genres of electronic music without allowing itself to become pigeon holed. The debut album released on Twisted Records has taken on cult status in the underground electronica scenes around the world with duo drawing crowds in their thousands from London to Tokyo, New York to Australia

Chemical Brothers - Hanna
Not so much a new Album but just the soundtrack to the movie. I havent seen the movie so dont know how it fits and its hard to cast an opinion because of that. In the movie it might seem like an amazing soundtrack. Its not quite as good as Further which for me was the best album since Come With Us. But thats not to say its bad. There are still some really good tracks on here in a typical Chemical Brothers style they will always get your foot tapping and head bobbing. Plus its nice to take in something different from the duo other than dance tracks made for rock fans. Certainly to be more enjoyed by some more than others. 7/10
Friendly Fires - Pala
I first caught a glimpse of these while watching the highlights of Glastonbury. And what a high point it was. There kind of a Indie Dance band of some sort or another if thats even a catagory. Comparable with the Klaxons but not completly different to some softer Chemical Brothers Tracks. So they seem to cover a wide variety of tempo styles but all of it is upbeat. The tempo of the whole album is fairly high which seems to be all good. The most poppy and catchy track is Hawaiian Air. Its hard not to like it with its feel good background sounds throughout the whole track. Album is well worth a few listens - 7/10

Panda Bear - Person Pitch
Panda Bear – Person Pitch
A member of Animal Collective, Panda Bear has crafted an album in a similar vein to Merriweather Post Pavilion. The sound is the same brand of ecstatic, cut and paste psychadelia but in a slightly more accessible package. Its centrepiece is the epic Bro’s. If you liked the Animal Collective album then this is well worth checking out…8/10

The Knife - Silent Shout
The Knife – Silent Shout
When you get hold of an album by a Swedish electronic brother/sister duo you usually imagine that you’re onto something pretty obscure; an album of music that you couldn’t possibly have heard before. However as the opening bass intro to the opening track, the eponymous Silent Shout, kicks in it soon becomes apparent that the tentacles of international marketing have a long reach. I can’t remember which advertisement used the track but it just goes to show you that there isn’t much great music in this world that has escaped unnoticed. If you dig a little deeper you’ll also find that The Knife gave us the original Heartbeats from their debut album, covered by Jose Gonzales and used by Sony in another advert. The fact that this album has found its way into the mainstream isn’t really a surprise because despite its dark electronica it’s actually a very accessible album. There’s something about the fragmented and distorted vocals, juddering bass and bubbling synths that draw you in; the sound is dark and frightening but utterly compelling. The music sounds simple, hollow and cold but full of meaning. Reminiscent of early 90s dance music with a wintery Scandinavian twist; as if Orbital had moved to Kiruna in northern Sweden back in 1994, dumped Allison Goldfrapp and recruited Bjork. That might not appeal to everyone’s taste but I felt that this was one of the best albums that I’ve heard in years. For those of you still living in the material world there’s a three-disc version of the album available that adds a live CD and DVD and is essential. Whatever format you go for this album is a must hear. Hopefully I haven’t over hyped it…10/10

tUnE-yArDs - Who Kill
Decided this album was good enough to warrant another attempt to resurrect this pitiful blog. Despite its initial interest its turned out a bit like a new girlfrind. All parties wnated it to start and go well but in the end never really bothered their arse with it so it petered out. So I'll make another stab at it over the next few weeks. Gave it a little face lift as well
And on to tune-yards. Initially it feels like a Feel Good summer album. lots of toe tapping catchy rifts with what feels like a fresh vocal sound on top. Its extremely easy to listen to and the up steps Bizness. really super track that starts slow and mellow but builds to a real rollercoaster of shouting that works quite well. The brains behind Tune-Yards Garbus, Uses her voice very well in some parts as one of the instruments which is actually a good thing in this case. I’ve added the video for Bizness. It’s a weird one buts something different. 8/10

Fleet Foxes
Great Debut album. The guys are from Seatlle and are all quite young, but their music tricks you into thinking they are older. Especially the lead singer Robin Pecknold who is now only 24, with his amazing voice. You could listen to him all day.
They released their debut album in 2008 which means that they were all only about 19-21 at the time.. Really impressive. If you are looking for music to chill out to or relax the mind this album is amazing, its also quite emotional. Check out the link below for a collaboration they did with Grizzly Bear, you can download three songs for free:

Scala & Kolacny Brothers - Dream On
A very different covers album. These are the guys that did the song for the movie Social Network. They are a Belgian girls’ choir but cover a load of different artists. Its quite good and very relaxing. Might not be to everyones taste but still worth a listen. 9 / 10
